Gem State Recreation – A Multi-Use Playground

The Gem State Hydroelectric Project doubled electricity generation in Idaho Falls, and increased recreational opportunities. Gem Lake stretches four miles upriver to the Lower Plant. The lake features two parks which include picnic facilities and boat launches. The lake is popular for fishing and water sports.

Urban fisheries are a side benefit of the Gem State Project. Idaho Falls Power stocks the lake several times a year with Rainbow Trout. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has also planted several hundred White Sturgeon, which can grow to be 100 years old and reach 10-12 feet in length.

Beyond Gem State
Even decades after the completion of the Gem State Plant, the project continued to enhance recreation and community parks. Idaho Falls Power donated structured rock from teh powerhouse excavation to creat the Rock Gardens at Taylor Crossing.
